BACKGROUND: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a major cause of visual impairment in premature infants, often requiring surgical interventions in advanced stages. This retrospective case series study investigates non-surgical management for Stage 4A ROP, specifically the use of combined laser therapy and intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections. METHODS: Ten eyes from five infants with Stage 4A ROP were treated with a combined laser and anti-VEGF approach. Comprehensive follow-up examinations were conducted to evaluate the treatment outcomes. RESULTS: The study demonstrated successful retinal attachment without complications, showcasing the efficacy and safety of this non-surgical method. A comparison with surgical interventions highlighted the potential benefits in terms of reduced adverse effects. DISCUSSION: This combined treatment emerges as a promising first-choice option for Stage 4A ROP, offering rapid regression without surgical intervention, particularly in early stages. However, larger randomized clinical trials are necessary to validate these findings and establish definitive guidelines for managing this complex condition. CONCLUSION: Combined laser and anti-VEGF therapy proved to be an effective and safe non-surgical approach for Stage 4A ROP, with the potential to reduce the need for surgery, especially in its early presentation. Further research is required to confirm these findings and provide comprehensive recommendations for clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have identified graded oxygen saturation targets to prevent retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a serious complication in preterm infants. We aimed to analyze the critical period of oxygen supplementation and/or invasive ventilation associated with severe ROP. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included neonates with a gestational age (GA) < 29 weeks. Participants were divided into two groups: treated retinopathy and untreated/no retinopathy. Time-weighted average FiO2 (TWAFiO2) and weekly invasive ventilation were compared between groups by postnatal age (PNA) and postmenstrual age (PMA). The association of treated retinopathy with TWAFiO2 and invasive ventilation was analyzed. RESULTS: Data from 287 neonates were analyzed; 98 were treated for ROP and had lower GAs (25.5 vs. 27.4 weeks, p < 0.01) and lower birthweights (747.6 vs. 1014 g, p < 0.001) than those with untreated/no ROP. TWAFiO2 was higher from PMA 26-34 weeks, except for PMA 31 weeks in treated ROP, and higher in the first nine weeks of life in treated ROP. On multiple logistic regression, TWAFiO2 and invasive ventilation were associated with ROP treatment during the first seven weeks PNA. Invasive ventilation was associated with ROP treatment from PMA 26-31 weeks; no association was found for TWAFiO2 and PMA. CONCLUSIONS: Amount of oxygen supplementation and/or invasive ventilation during the first 7 weeks of life or up to 31 weeks PMA was associated with development of severe ROP. This period might be candidate timing for strict oxygen supplementation strategies in preterm infants, while concerns of mortality with low oxygen supplementation should be further explored.

Aim: Retinopathy of prematurity is a significant global cause of childhood blindness. This study aims to identify serum biomarkers that are associated with the development of ROP. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using PRISMA guidelines. Three databases were searched (Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science) from 2003 to March 2023. Only studies investigating serum biomarker levels in preterm infants (<37 weeks gestation) were included. Results: Meta-analysis suggests that low serum IGF-1 levels have a strong association with the development of ROP [SMD (95% CI) of -.46 [-.63, -.30], p < .001]. Meta-analysis suggests that higher serum glucose levels were associated with the development of ROP [SMD (95% CI) of 1.25 [.94, 1.55], p < .001]. Meta-analysis suggests that thrombocytopenia is associated with the development of ROP [SMD (95% CI) of -.62 [-.86, -.37], p < .001]. Conclusion: Low levels of serum IGF-1, high levels of serum glucose and thrombocytopenia all appear to have the strongest association with the development of ROP out of the 63 biomarkers investigated in this review. These associations highlight their potential use as diagnostic biomarkers in ROP, though further research is needed to establish the exact relationship between these biomarkers and disease pathogenesis.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a serious retinal vascular disorder that needs prompt diagnosis, and treatment to prevent undesired visual outcomes. Due to its shorter period of disease progression, it is important to be hasty in treating ROP. Erythrocyte suspension (ES) aggravates the progression of ROP. However, this progression may be transient as in the present case reports. This case report aimed to present two cases that developed type 1 ROP after erythrocyte suspension transfusion. Clinical findings of the patients were resolved within a few days without any intervention. Premature infants receiving ES treatment can be observed for 24-48 hours, and the treatment can be planned after determining the persistence of the plus sign. Background: Concerns remain over the long-term safety of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors to treat retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). RAINBOW is an open label randomised trial comparing intravitreal ranibizumab (in 0.2 mg and 0.1 mg doses) with laser therapy in very low birthweight infants (<1500 g) with ROP. Methods: Of 201 infants completing RAINBOW, 180 were enrolled in the RAINBOW Extension Study. At 5 years, children underwent ophthalmic, development and health assessments. The primary outcome was visual acuity in the better-seeing eye. The study is registered with ClinicalTrial.gov, NCT02640664. Findings: Between 16-6-2016 and 21-4-2022, 156 children (87%) were evaluated at 5 years. Of 32 children with no acuity test result, 25 had a preferential looking test, for 4 children investigators reported low vision for each eye, and in 3 further children no vision measurement was obtained. 124 children completed the acuity assessment, the least square mean (95% CI) letter score in the better seeing eye was similar in the three trial arms-66.8 (62.9-70.7) following ranibizumab 0.2 mg, 64.6 (60.6-68.5) following ranibizumab 0.1 mg and 62.1 (57.8-66.4) following laser therapy; differences in means: ranibizumab 0.2 mg v laser: 4.7 (95% CI: -1.1, 10.5); 0.1 mg v laser: 2.5 (-3.4, 8.3); 0.2 mg v 0.1 mg: 2.2 (-3.3, 7.8). High myopia (worse than -5 dioptres) in at least one eye occurred in 4/52 (8%) children following ranibizumab 0.2 mg, 8/55 (15%) following ranibizumab 0.1 mg and 11/45 (24%) following laser therapy (0.2 mg versus laser: odds ratio: 3.99 (1.16-13.72)). Ocular and systemic secondary outcomes and adverse events were distributed similarly in each trial arm. Interpretation: 5-year outcomes confirm the findings of the original RAINBOW trial and a planned interim analysis at 2 years, including a reduced frequency of high myopia following ranibizumab treatment. No effects of treatment on non-ocular outcomes were detected. Funding: Novartis Pharma AG.

Purpose: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is the main cause of blindness in premature infants. Despite developments in neonatal care and management guidelines, ROP is becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. Hence, the identification of risk factors for ROP is critical to diminish the burden of the disease. Methods: This cross-sectional study included all infants with gestational age ≤ 36 weeks referred to the ophthalmology clinic at Shafa hospital, Kerman, Iran from 2014 to 2015. Ophthalmologic examinations were performed followed by demographic and ophthalmic data collection and analysis. Results: A total of 579 preterm neonates were screened including 325 boys and 254 girls. The incidence of ROP was 17.96%. Mean birth weight (BW) and gestational age (GA) were 1668.0 grams and 31.2 weeks, respectively. The results indicated that BW, GA, duration of hospitalization and oxygen therapy were significantly related to the development of ROP, however, after multivariate logistic regression analysis, only BW and duration of hospitalization remained significant. There were no significant associations between gender, type of delivery, or assisted reproductive technologies, and ROP (P = 0.461, 0.461, and 0.826, respectively). Conclusion: BW and duration of hospitalization were significant risk factors for ROP in the current study. BW was also strongly associated with the need for therapy.

Purpose: To determine the correlation between blood flow metrics measured by intravenous fluorescein angiography (IVFA) and the blood flow velocity index (BFVi) obtained by laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) in infants with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Design: Prospective comparative pilot study. Subjects: Seven eyes from 7 subjects with ROP. Methods: Unilateral LSCI and IVFA data were obtained from each subject in the neonatal intensive care unit. Five LSCI-based metrics and 5 IVFA-based metrics were extracted from images to quantify blood flow patterns in the same region of interest. Correlation between LSCI-based and IVFA-based blood flow metrics was compared between 2 subgroups of ROP severity: moderate ROP (defined as stage ≤ 2 without Plus disease) and severe ROP (defined as stage ≥3 or Plus disease). Main Outcome Measures: Pearson and Kendall rank correlation coefficients between IVFA and LSCI metrics; Student t test P values comparing LSCI metrics between "severe" and "moderate" ROP groups. Results: Pearson correlations between IVFA and LSCI included arterial-venous transit time (AVTT) and peak BFVi (pBFVi; r = -0.917; P = 0.004), AVTT and dip BFVi (dBFVi; r = -0.920; P = 0.003), AVTT and mean BFVi (r = -0.927- P = 0.003), and AVTT and volumetric rise index (r = -0.779; P = 0.039). Kendall rank correlation between AVTT and dBFVi was r = -0.619 (P = 0.051). pBFVi was higher in severe ROP than in moderate ROP (8.4 ± 0.6 and 4.4 ± 1.8, respectively; P = 0.0045 using the 2-sample t test with pooled variance and P = 0.0952 using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test). Conclusions: Correlation was found between blood flow metrics obtained by IVFA and noninvasive LSCI techniques. We demonstrate the feasibility of obtaining quantitative metrics using LSCI in infants with ROP in this pilot study; however, further investigation is needed to evaluate its potential use in clinical assessment of ROP severity. OBJECTIVE: Infants who meet the screening guidelines for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) based on birth weight and gestational age undergo serial ophthalmological examinations for its detection and treatment. However, <10% of patients require treatment, and less than half develop ROP. Poor postnatal weight gain has been reported to be a strong indicator of ROP development; however, the information regarding this is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between postnatal weight gain and ROP development in preterm infants. METHODS: The data of 675 preterm infants with gestational age ≤32 weeks, who were hospitalized in our neonatal intensive care unit, were obtained retrospectively from file records. The infants' demographic characteristics, clinical findings, and weekly weight gain (g/kg/day) during the first 8 weeks were recorded. The univariate was used to examine the risk factors for ROP followed by multivariate regression. RESULTS: The incidence of ROP in the infants included in the study was 41% (n = 278) and 13.3% (n = 37) of them required treatment. In the infants of the group that developed ROP, the mean birth weight and gestational age were significantly lower than those in the group that did not develop ROP (973 ± 288 and 1301 ± 349 g, p = 0.001 and 28.48 ± 1.95 and 30.08 ± 1.60 weeks, p = 0.001, respectively). As the gestational week and birth weight decreased, ROP development and the risk of ROP-requiring treatment increased. In the infants of the group that developed ROP, the mean weight gain in the postnatal third week was detected as significantly lower compared to those in the group that did not develop ROP (13.9 ± 8.2 and 15.4 ± 6.8 g, p = 0.034). On multiple logistic regression analysis, birth weight (<750 g) (odds ratio [OR], 8.67; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.99-18.82, p = 0.001), blood transfusion (OR, 2.39; 95% CI, 1.34-4.24, p = 0.003), necrotizing enterocolitis (OR, 4.79; 95% CI, 1.05-26.85, p = 0.045), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (OR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.22-3.36, p = 0.006), antenatal steroid therapy (OR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.05-2.43, p = 0.028), surfactant administration (OR, 2.06; 95% CI, 1.32-3.2, p = 0.001) were independent risk factors for ROP development. CONCLUSION: Postnatal weight gain may not be an accurate predictor of ROP development after adjusting for confounding factors. However, the analysis of independent risk factors that influenced the development of ROP revealed a statistically significant effect in cases of low birth weight, blood transfusion, necrotizing enterocolitis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and antenatal steroid and surfactant therapies. These findings may help ophthalmologists and neonatologists to pay special attention to this patient group during ROP scanning.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term cognitive function in children treated with intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) for retinopathy of prematurity(ROP), and the impact of IVR on the growth and ocular development. METHODS: In this retrospective study, the premature children aged 4 to 9 years who received monotherapy of IVR (IVR group, n = 25) or monotherapy of laser photocoagulation (LP) (LP group, n = 33) for ROP, and the same age premature children with no ROP (Control group, n = 26) were enrolled from 2020 to 2022 in the pediatric fundus clinic of Shenzhen Eye Hospital. Main outcome measures were full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) and index score using the Chinese version of the Wechsler intelligence scale for children-fourth edition (WISC-IV) and Wechsler preschool and primary scale of intelligence-fourth edition (WPPSI-IV). All children were examined and analyzed for growth and ocular development by recording the height, weight, head circumference, spherical equivalent (SE), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and axial length (AL). RESULTS: There were 17 children in IVR group, 17 in LP group, and 11 in Control group who received the WISC-IV assessment. There were no significant differences in FSIQ, verbal comprehension index, perceptual reasoning index, working memory index, processing speed index, general ability index and cognitive efficiency index among the three groups. There were 8 children in IVR group, 16 in LP group, and 15 in Control group who received the WPPSI-IV assessment. There were no significant differences in FSIQ, verbal comprehension index, visuospatial index, fluid reasoning index, working memory index, non-verbal index, general ability index and cognitive efficiency index among the three groups. There was no significant difference in BCVA among the three groups (P = 0.74), however, there is an increase for AL in IVR group when compared with LP group (22.60 ± 0.58 vs. 22.13 ± 0.84, P = 0.003), and the ROP patients of IVR group have a significant increase in the AL compared to the Control group(22.60 ± 0.58 vs. 22.03 ± 0.71, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Children with a history of IVR have a similar cognitive function outcomes compared to those with a history of LP or were premature without ROP. ROP children with a history of IVR has longer AL than those treated with LP.

Laser photocoagulation (LPC) and/or intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections constitute the current standard treatment for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). This network meta-analysis focus on whether a ranking of interventions may be established for different dose levels of intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF agents (aflibercept, bevacizumab, conbercept, ranibizumab) as primary treatments for ROP versus laser in terms of retreatment rate as primary outcome, and time to retreatment and refractive error as secondary endpoints, since best anti-VEGF dosage remains under debate. Sixty-eight studies (15 randomized control trials and 53 nonrandomized studies) of 12,356 eyes of 6445 infants were retrieved from databases (2005 Jan. - 2023 June). Studies were evaluated for model fit, risk of bias and confidence of evidence in Network Meta-Analysis (CINeMA). Bayesian NMA showed that anti-VEGF drugs were not inferior to laser in terms of retreatment rate. For intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB), doses half of the conventional infant dose showed a low risk of retreatment rate (risk ratio (RR) of 1.43; 95% credible interval (CrI): 0.508, 4.03). On probability ranking as surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) plot, half dose of bevacizumab had a better position than conventional and augmented (1.2-2 times the regular dose) doses. A similar probability trend was observed for half vs. conventional doses of aflibercept and ranibizumab. Conventional infant dose of conbercept showed the lowest risk for retreatment (RR 0.846; 95% CrI: 0.245, 2.91). For secondary endpoints, lower doses of anti-VEGF agents were associated with shorter times to retreatment. The largest changes were noted for the augmented doses of bevacizumab and ranibizumab (0.3 mg) with means of 14.1 weeks (95% CrI: 6.65, 21.6) and 12.8 weeks (95% CrI: 3.19, 20.9), respectively. Finally, NMA demonstrated better refractive profile for anti-VEGF than laser therapy, especially for the conventional infant doses of bevacizumab and ranibizumab which exhibited a significantly better refractive profile than LPC, with mean differences of 1.67 (spherical equivalent - diopters) (95% CrI: 0.705, 2.67) and 2.19 (95% CrI: 0.782, 3.59), respectively. In the SUCRA plots, LPC had a markedly different position with a higher probability for myopia. Further clinical trials comparing different intravitreal doses of anti-VEGF agents are needed, but our findings suggest that low doses of these drugs retain efficacy and may reduce ocular and systemic undesired events.

Myeloid cells including microglia and macrophages play crucial roles in retinal homeostasis by clearing cellular debris and regulating inflammation. These cells are activated in several blinding ischemic retinal diseases including diabetic retinopathy, where they may exert both beneficial and detrimental effects on neurovascular function and angiogenesis. Myeloid cells impact the progression of retinal pathologies and recent studies suggest that targeting myeloid cells is a promising therapeutic strategy to mitigate diabetic retinopathy and other ischemic retinal diseases. This review summarizes the recent advances in our understanding of the role of microglia and macrophages in retinal diseases and focuses on the effects of myeloid cells on neurovascular injury and angiogenesis in ischemic retinopathies. We highlight gaps in knowledge and advocate for a more detailed understanding of the role of myeloid cells in retinal ischemic injury to fully unlock the potential of targeting myeloid cells as a therapeutic strategy for retinal ischemia.

Macrophages form a crucial component of the innate immune system, and their activation is indispensable for various aspects of immune and inflammatory processes, tissue repair, and maintenance of the balance of the body's state. Macrophages are found in all ocular tissues, spanning from the front surface, including the cornea, to the posterior pole, represented by the choroid/sclera. The neural retina is also populated by specialised resident macrophages called microglia. The plasticity of microglia/macrophages allows them to adopt different activation states in response to changes in the tissue microenvironment. When exposed to various factors, microglia/macrophages polarise into distinct phenotypes, each exhibiting unique characteristics and roles. Furthermore, extensive research has indicated a close association between microglia/macrophage polarisation and the development and reversal of various intraocular diseases. The present article provides a review of the recent findings on the association between microglia/macrophage polarisation and ocular pathological processes (including autoimmune uveitis, optic neuritis, sympathetic ophthalmia, retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, subretinal fibrosis, uveal melanoma, ischaemic optic neuropathy, retinopathy of prematurity and choroidal neovascularization). The paradoxical role of microglia/macrophage polarisation in retinopathy of prematurity is also discussed. Several studies have shown that microglia/macrophages are involved in the pathology of ocular diseases. However, it is required to further explore the relevant mechanisms and regulatory processes. The relationship between the functional diversity displayed by microglia/macrophage polarisation and intraocular diseases may provide a new direction for the treatment of intraocular diseases.

BACKGROUND: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in premature infants is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Mode and timing of treatment are still controversial. Data are limited in the most extremely premature infants <26 weeks of gestational age (GA), where clinical problems are most significant and patients are most vulnerable. AIMS: To investigate whether different approaches to surgical closure of PDA in two large Swedish centers has an impact on clinical outcomes including mortality in extremely preterm infants born <26 weeks GA. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, two-center, cohort study. SUBJECTS: Infants born at 22+0-25+6 weeks GA between 2010 and 2016 at Uppsala University Children's Hospital (UUCH; n = 228) and Queen Silvia Children's Hospital Gothenburg (QSCHG; n = 220). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Survival, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). RESULTS: Surgical closure of PDA was more common and performed earlier at QSCHG (50 % vs 16 %; median age 11 vs 44 days; p < 0.01). Survival was similar in both centres. There was a higher incidence of severe BPD and longer duration of mechanical ventilation at UUCH (p < 0.01). There was a higher incidence of ROP, IVH and sepsis at QSCH (p < 0.05, p < 0.01 and p < 0.01). A sub-group analysis matching all surgically treated infants at QSCHG with infants at UUCH with the same GA showed similar results as the total cohort. CONCLUSION: Earlier and higher rate of surgical PDA closure in this cohort of extremely preterms born <26 weeks GA did not impact mortality but was associated with lower rates of severe BPD and higher rates of severe ROP.

Preterm birth remains a significant global health concern as it can lead to various health complications and long-term developmental challenges. Early nutrition intervention plays a crucial role in optimizing the growth, development, and overall health outcomes of premature infants. This review aims to summarize and analyze the existing literature regarding the effect of early nutrition interventions on premature babies. A comprehensive search was conducted through various electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, focusing on nutrition interventions specifically targeting premature infants. The review highlights the benefits of early nutrition interventions, including enteral and parenteral feeding, human milk, and the provision of specific nutrients. These interventions have been shown to enhance growth rates, promote neurodevelopmental outcomes, reduce the incidence and severity of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), reduce the risk of infection, and improve overall morbidity and mortality rates in premature babies. Overall, the findings from this review suggest that early nutrition interventions have a positive impact on the health and developmental outcomes of premature babies. However, further research is required to determine the optimal approaches, optimal timing, and long-term effects of various interventions. Collaboration between healthcare providers, researchers, and families is crucial in implementing evidence-based nutrition practices and supporting the growth and development of premature infants.

OBJECTIVES: The main aim was to compare the effects of 2 parenteral lipid emulsions on retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) incidence, severity, and need for treatment. Secondary aim was to compare the effect on weight gain in the first 6 weeks of life. METHODS: Single-center, observational, retrospective study analyzing preterm infants with a gestational age (GA) <31 weeks and a birth weight <1251 g born between April 2015 and December 2018. The infants' medical records were reviewed to collect clinical data. Parenteral nutrition (PN) details were obtained from the hospital pharmacy database. RESULTS: In total, 180 patients were included: 90 received ClinOleic® and 90 received SMOFlipid®. No significant differences were observed for the incidence of ROP (40% in ClinOleic® group and 41% in SMOFlipid® group, p=.88) or ROP requiring treatment (4% and 10%, respectively, p=.152). Weekly weight gain was similar in the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed no difference between the 2 groups regarding ROP, ROP requiring treatment, or weekly weight gain in the first 6 weeks of life.

We conducted a study on the impact of intraperitoneal injections of melatonin and its three bioisosteres (compounds 1-3) on the development of oxygen-induced retinopathy in newborn rats during a 21-day experiment. It was demonstrated that melatonin and its analogues 1-3 effectively reduce the total protein concentration in the vitreous body of rat pups, decrease concentration of VEGF-A, and lower the level of oxidative stress (as indicated by normalization of antioxidant activity in the vitreous body). Melatonin and its analogues 1-3 equally normalize the level of VEGF-A. Analogues 1 and 2 even exceed melatonin in their ability to reduce protein influx into the vitreous body. However, analogue 2 had no effect on antioxidant activity, while analogues 1 and 3 caused a significant increase in this parameter, with analogue 3 even slightly exceeding melatonin. Thus, it can be concluded that analogues 1-3 are comparable to melatonin and can be utilized as potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity.

PURPOSE: The purpose is to study the anatomical outcome of eyes in aggressive retinopathy of prematurity (AROP), treated with laser photocoagulation alone and to evaluate factors affecting outcomes. METHODS: Records of consecutive babies diagnosed with AROP, undergoing laser photocoagulation treatment in rural tertiary care centers from October 2016 to January 2021 were reviewed retrospectively. Anatomical outcome at 6 months follow-up was grouped as good in eyes with complete regression and poor in those who developed retinal detachment (stage IV a, IV b, and V). Both groups were compared with respect to the period of gestation, birth weight (BW), age at screening, age at treatment, zone of disease, presence of retinal fibrovascular proliferation (FVP), tunica vasculosa lentis, preretinal bleed, need for supplement laser, and associated systemic risk factors. RESULTS: Of the total of 2468 babies screened, 124 (5.02%) were diagnosed with severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), of which 54 (43.5%) lasered AROP babies were analyzed. Mean BW and gestation period of the AROP cohort were 1.43 kg and 31.1 weeks, respectively. Eighty-six eyes (79.6%) had good outcomes with laser photocoagulation alone. Posterior location of disease, presence of FVP, neonatal sepsis, shock, and late screening for ROP were found to be factors associated with poor outcomes. CONCLUSION: Adequate and timely treatment with laser photocoagulation in AROP can achieve good treatment outcomes in a significant proportion of babies. Although a combined approach using laser, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor and early vitrectomy is better, laser remains a viable treatment option in AROP, especially with limited resources and high risk of loss to follow-up.

Retinal neovascularization (RNV) is a pathological process that primarily occurs in diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, and retinal vein occlusion. It is a common yet debilitating clinical condition that culminates in blindness. Urgent efforts are required to explore more efficient and less limiting therapeutic strategies. Key RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), crucial for post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by binding to RNAs, are closely correlated with RNV development. RBP-RNA interactions are altered during RNV. Here, we briefly review the characteristics and functions of RBPs, and the mechanism of RNV. Then, we present insights into the role of the regulatory network of RBPs in RNV. HuR, eIF4E, LIN28B, SRSF1, METTL3, YTHDF1, Gal-1, HIWI1, and ZFR accelerate RNV progression, whereas YTHDF2 and hnRNPA2B1 hinder it. The mechanisms elucidated in this review provide a reference to guide the design of therapeutic strategies to reverse abnormal processes.

PURPOSE: To evaluate stereopsis in term-born, preterm, and preterm children with and without retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and its treatment. METHODS: The cross-sectional study included 322 children between 3 and 11 years of age born term or preterm, with or without ROP, and with or without treatment for ROP. The ROP treatments were laser therapy, intravitreal injection (IVI) of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor, or their combination. Stereoacuity was measured using the Titmus Stereo Test, and the results among various age groups were analyzed. RESULTS: Stereopsis was found to improve with increasing age at testing (P < 0.001) across the entire study population. The term group exhibited significantly better stereoacuity than the preterm group (P < 0.001). At 3-5 years and 6-8 years, the preterm children without ROP exhibited significantly better stereoacuity than did those with ROP (P < 0.001 and P = 0.02, respectively); however, at 9-11 years, both groups exhibited similar stereoacuity (P = 0.34). The stereoacuity in the children with untreated ROP was similar to that of the children with treated ROP in all age groups (P > 0.05). No significant differences in stereopsis were identified between children with ROP treated with laser versus with IVI (P > 0.05). From multivariate analysis, younger age at testing (P = 0.001) and younger gestational age (P < 0.001) were associated with poorer stereopsis. CONCLUSIONS: Stereopsis development gradually improved with age in all groups. The children born preterm exhibited poorer stereoacuity than those born term. Children with ROP treated with laser photocoagulation versus IVI may exhibit similar levels of stereoacuity. Younger age at testing and gestational age were independent risk factors for poorer stereoacuity.
